Paying your credit cards? Whats the best way?The best way would be to pay them off every month in full. That way you don't get charged any interest.
So how do you pay them? Each card will vary in exact details so treat this only as a guide.
If you regularly pay off your credit cards in full then you should make sure you're getting the best deal from your cards - perhaps you could look at other offers available such as bonuses -cashback, Air Miles or Nectar points - cards with no annual fee, or cards with longer interest free period.
If you don't pay off your cards then you could be one of an increasingly big number of people who play the credit card companies at their own game. We don't recommend you try this unless you are very disciplined and efficient and even then we think you're playing with fire if you forget! People swap money round from cards with 0% on balance transfers so they move the debt about. This is easy when lots of companies offer this as a feature but will be impossible if the current trend of 0% cards falls. What these "card tarts" do is put the money into a savings account and then move this "debt" around - thus making interest on the savings for nothing. Obviously if you miss moving the debt back - or spend the cash or blow the limit on the cards you are doomed. SO DO NOT DO THIS! If you have a genuine need not to pay off your credit cards then you will be better off with a lower interest rate card. The government is currently introducing rules to make this more transparent about how much interest you are charged. Always pay your cards ontime if you intend to - don't miss by a day or you will get charged interest! Making regular payments on your credit card will be good for your credit rating.
You can pay your credit card at your bank, or post a cheque, or by direct debit, or sometimes via internet banking. |
