Where to get a credit card- Using your credit card

Before applying for an online credit card you need:

  • Your bank current account number
  • Your bank sort code
  • Your present address in the UK
  • Your previous address (if you've lived at your present address for less than 3 years)

You should be over 18 years of age and resident in the UK.

Using your credit card -

Always be careful where you use your credit card - don't shop online at shops whcih aren't secure - if in doubt look for the padlock symbol at the bottom of the browser page.

Don't let your card out of your site either - restaurants are terrible at doing this, but its easy enough to take your bill up to the counter to pay it.

Keeping track - Always keep the receipts for your purchases. One handy hint is to use a container to put them all in - empty your wallet or purse into it (just the receipts) and you'll get in the habit of doing this fairly quickly - it'll help you check offf stuff against your credit card statement, which means you'll spot problems much quicker just than trying to remember yourself.

If you're really organised you could keep a running total - either using software or just paper and pen.


Sometimes if you've got a tendency to overspend on your credit card you can really reduce spending if you know you're keeping a running total - the additional action of making note about it with hopefully help you. (Or carry a note book and write it down before you spend it - this is the principal some dieters use - write it down before you eat it!)

Staying within your balance eveyr month is as important as paying off the amount - credit card interest is usually quite high - but if you're able to make the full payment every month you'll increase your credit record.
